We primarily focus on designing end grain cutting boards using exotic woods. We can carve a company logo on the back or created a unique in-lay for the front. When selecting a design it important to remember that each piece of wood has its own character which is not reveled until it is finished.
End Grain cutting boards are made with some of the densest wood – Peruvian Walnut, Walnut, Cherry, Hard Maple and then accented with a purple heart or paduka. Because of this they are more durable and last longer than conventional cutting boards. Most conventional cutting boards are made with edge grain which exposes the grains to be cut during use and harder on your knives.
With end grain it is very dense and has a greater tolerance for chopping/cutting motion. With the wood fibers facing up in an end grain cutting board the fibers allow the knives to slide through them reducing the wear on your knives. After the knives pass through the fibers, they close back up giving the cutting board a self-healing ability. With care the cutting boards can be passed down from generation to generation
Some very important Don’t!
· Don’t soak your cutting board in the sink for extended periods of time.
· Don’t clean in a dishwasher.
· Don’t use anything but mineral oil to recondition you cutting board. Vegetable oil, olive oil, etc. will turn rancid over time.
· Don’t scrub with abrasive material (i.e. steel wool).
Some very important Do’s?
· Wash your cutting board frequently with hot soapy water but be sure to rinse and dry immediately.
· Store your cutting board so it gets a lot of air flow.
· Recondition your cutting board monthly with mineral oil/bee’s wax. I recommend warming the wax before applying to allow the greatest penetration.
